Five dimensions, scored in the open

Every answer carries zero to three points by the maturity it describes. Three questions per dimension give a dimension score out of nine; the five together map to one of four readiness levels. The rubric is published because a score you can't inspect isn't worth acting on.

Strategy & Business Case

Whether the move has a stated reason, a scope and an owner — the outcomes each workload is supposed to deliver, which systems go first, and who is accountable for the program.

Why this matters

Migrations that start from a contract renewal or a vague instruction to modernize stall in month four, when the first hard trade-off has no owner to make it. A business case per workload is what turns 'move to the cloud' into decisions a team can execute.

Applications & Data

How well you understand the estate you are moving: every application and its dependencies, where the data lives and how much of it, and how fit each system is for the cloud as it stands.

Why this matters

The application you forgot to inventory is the one that breaks the cut-over, and data gravity — volumes, residency rules, the systems that must stay in sync — decides the cost and the timeline more than any compute choice. Knowing the estate is most of the work.

The cloud's advantages are operational — elasticity, repeatability, fast recovery — and none of them arrive with a lift-and-shift onto hand-built servers. A landing zone, infrastructure as code and a delivery pipeline are what make the new estate cheaper to run than the old one.

Whether identity, data protection and the compliance obligations that apply to you are designed into the target — not bolted on after the first audit question.

Why this matters

Cloud incidents are overwhelmingly configuration and identity failures, not provider failures, and regulated data — payment, health, personal — carries residency and control obligations that must be settled before a region is chosen. Security decided late is security redone.

The cloud bill is the surprise most migrations end on, and it is a governance failure, not a pricing one — untagged resources, environments nobody switches off, an operating model that never changed. Skills and cost governance decide whether the cloud pays back after year one.

The order of work is clear: an inventory, a business case per workload and a named owner come first, and each one closes several gaps at once.

Real foundations exist — some of the estate is mapped, some practices are automated, someone cares about the bill — but the pieces do not yet hold together, and migrations fail exactly at the joins: the dependency nobody drew, the environment built by hand, the regulation discovered mid-move. A cloud readiness assessment is a structured way to judge how prepared an organization is to move its applications and data to the cloud and run them there well. It looks at the strategy and business case, the application and data estate, platform operations, security and compliance, and the team and cost governance the move will need.

Anyone responsible for a move to the cloud or for deciding whether to make one: CTOs and heads of engineering, IT and infrastructure leaders, product owners whose systems are candidates for migration, and founders weighing a data-center exit. The questions are in plain language — you need working knowledge of your systems, not certifications.

03Does the assessment recommend AWS, Azure or Google Cloud?

No. The assessment is vendor-neutral by design — it measures readiness, not provider choice, and no option names a platform as the right answer. Which provider fits depends on your existing skills, data residency requirements, licensing and workload shape, and that is a decision the assessment prepares you for rather than makes.
